Half of Canadians Would Smile More If Their Teeth Were Healthier

A recent survey conducted by Leger Marketing for 123Dentist across Canada reveals that 51% of Canadians say they would smile more often if their teeth were healthier or looked better. The polling, carried out in August among about 1,500 respondents, underscores how much self-image and dental appearance are tied together.

The findings also show that one in three Canadians are dissatisfied with their smile. Further insights: about 38% admit they avoid smiling in photos or social settings because they feel self-conscious about their teeth — and among those unhappy with their smiles, that number jumps to 64%. Interestingly, the survey indicates a shift in behavior over time: one-third of respondents say they smile less now than they did two years ago, while only 20% claim they smile more.

Almost everyone surveyed recognized the significance of oral health in broader well-being: 97% agreed that maintaining oral health is essential to overall health. Around 84% believe that a healthy smile contributes to self-esteem and general quality of life, and 90% say a confident smile influences first impressions.

In response to these sentiments, 123Dentist launched the “Smiles Across Canada” campaign. This initiative includes community events in ten cities, charitable programs, and promotional efforts intended to encourage Canadians to improve their oral health and feel more comfortable smiling. The campaign is supported by a new mascot, “Smiley,” and aims to help more people access dental care through revamped digital services and awareness-raising efforts.

According to Jeff Leger, CEO of 123Dentist, the survey results highlight how many Canadians currently smile less than they feel they should. He emphasized that the organization is committed to helping people regain confidence through better dental care. Dr. Amin Shivji, founder and executive chair, added, “Dentistry isn’t just about teeth — it’s about people.” He noted that with a nationwide network of clinics, they hope to bring this message to communities across Canada.
